Tech Task: Making a happy Homer Meme

I got very bored and didn't want to do any other work so I made a meme for week 11, I used Make a Meme  to make this. Enjoyed this meme is totally not related to this module. My Lovely meme, created by me. I'm just at of realizing there's no extra credit for week 11, fuck my life.

Unity Free Tutorials

Hello and welcome to my blog ! With My Non-swinging Axe.  This week I'm looking at unity tutorials for my game, that totally weren't sent by my mate Oisin, cheers Oisin !  To see if they can help my game. The first one is "PATROL AI WITH UNITY AND C#"   Jesus, someone needs to calm down with the CapLk.  A handy video that teaches a little bit of different coding but with little explanation of what the code does but personally I recommend muting the video and just because his voice is annoying, I'm half deaf and his voice was giving a headache ! So after doing the tutorial I came across a problem, the script doesn't seem to be working, there's supposed to be a speed box but as you can see there is none, even after I tried to listen to the video I couldn't get it to work. For some reason, the script not coming up right, screen shot taken by me. Moving onto the next tutorial, "How to make Doors in Unity"   yes I'm serious.  This tut

Game Stories

This week reading, are two readings, first: " Into The Woods: A Practical Guide to the Hero's Journey " and second: " What every game developer needs to know about story ". Both readings discuss story in games and the hero's journey. The first reading, "Into The Woods: A Practical Guide to the Hero's Journey." which discuss at first about Myths, what are myths, how humans uses myths to teach lesson and how myths are apart of Human's DNA. This is an interesting discussion as Myths are often seen as "false-stories that scare kids" for example Big Foot or the boogey man. However even in this sense, Myths are useful, as it teaches lesson, again for example The boogey man only punished children who misbehaved to teach kids to behave, however there is another angle to look at this with the child murder, Albert Fish who was nicknamed "The boogey man", as the boogey man myths is he eats the misbehave child which Fish did wit

Wikipedia Trail: from Video Game Development to Indie Game Development

For this week, I went down the rabbit hole of Wikipedia, here are the articles I read for this: Video Game Development Overtime Labour Laws Thomas Percival Game development image, taken from Wikipedia . I start with Video Game Development because we've been talking about first playable's and alphas so I decided to look into it. I found that creating a game cost a lot, in 2010 it cost $20 million, I knew games cost a lot but I never thought it was $20 million ! I kept reading until I found overtime. Overtime, also know as Crunch, I've heard all about it in the recent months so I decided to check out what Wikipedia says about it. The article goes over what it is and how they laws to prevent companies from resorting to overtime. The page also talks about the laws in jurisdiction, which talks about the laws in the EU, the USA and other countries. This Led to me to labour laws. I looked into them because I wanted to know about labour laws and how they work. I

Growth Mindset: The surprising habits of original thinkers

A meme about Growth Mindset, taken from Here . For this extra credit I watched a video, " The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant" , a 15 minuter ted talk video about original thinkers. I found this video very interesting as it explains how original thinkers are usually procrastinators because it gives them time to think and allows for more creativity. I actually have an interesting story of this myself: Back in first year near the end of semester 1, we got 3-4 assignments and all were due in December. I decided to do my digital photography earlier then all the others and left my visual creativity assignment to the last minute. I had my photo essay done before a week before it was due, while I was still drawing and colouring my visual creativity the day it was due ! I thought I would 100% pass digital photography and was hoping that I barely pass visual creativity. I was so surprised that I pass digital photography with a C and got a B+ in Visual

Tech Task: Editing my profile

This Tech task I changed up my blog by editing my profile. The first thing I wanted to do was to add a profile picture to my blogging account. I decided to pick this one year from last year that I got in France in DisneyLand because why not ? Not because it was the only picture of me on my laptop. An photo of me messing around DisneyLand, taken by a mate, but the post is missing ?  I also change the not found page for my blog to a funny little reference, I don't why, I just wanted to. This put a smile on my face and I regret nothing.   Yes, I'm a big fan of the Star Wars.

Tech Task- changing my template

This week I decided to do something different and change the template of my blog ! Test out the new template, taken by me I knew blogger had many options for your blog so I decided to play around with some of the templates before finally setting on this one above in the picture! I was also thinking of adding a footer or changing the about me page. Here's other pictures of my blog with different templates ! I thought this would be a lot harder to do but it was easier then I thought. Different Template #1, taken by me Different Template #2, taken by me Different Template #3, taken by me I decided on my finally template by thinking about which template expresses me the best since this is my blog, so I decided on that one because it had my favourite colour. Overall, I'm glad how my blog looks now and I'm happy that I learned how to change it.

Week 9 Progress

Today's blog, I'm going to look at my progress and how I feel about it. So I looked back at my Time Strategies blog, which you can read here . It's weird looking back at that blog because I don't remember writing it at all! Granted I probably should've been looking over it to remind me what my plan was but I didn't. "Overall I'm planning to keep on top of the blogging, there may be a few bumps in the road but I still want to be ahead of that."  This a quote from my Time Strategies blog and it's kind of iconic. Back then I thought no setback would happened but, I was wrong Damn Unity.   Overall I'm happy with my progress and my grade so far. I'm thinking if I should do the extra credit, which I've done none of them and go for the A ? I think I might go for it. The assignments I enjoyed the most were the comments, it was nice seeing everyone's blog and seeing how people were doing.  Looking Forward, I want to try and not ha

Review Week Comments and Feedback.

Today I'm gonna review weekly comments and the feedback I received. As a person who values feedback and doesn't take offense to it, I actually liked the feedback idea. I found the feedback I received was in great quality, I felt the feedback was fair and understandable. I also receiving comments as it made feel closer to my year, how they acted and how we would joke. To be honest, after reading people's introduction blog, I started to hate my own introduction blog, everyone has a more interesting life, WE HAVE A WRESTLER!  and me? I'm just a cub leader who like metal and generally focuses on their work rather then their friends. I thought about changing my blog and my introduction but to be honest, I forgot. I found comments the most useful when it was easy to read, I hated when people would leave just walls of text, it's harder for me to read because of my dyslexia, in fact I had to get a RULER to read someone comment! Eventually I stopped reading the Berlin wa

Week 9 Reading and Writing.

This week reading is, not an reading but instead a reflection on the readings in general. A look back on the work and how much I've done, let's discuss. Overall, I think I did the best I could for the reading but improved along the way. I felt that my impersonal writing became stronger from doing the readings, though I admit not being to use "Me" or "I" was difficult. I feel the readings did help me, as learned more about game design through the reading, I never realized how much theoretical thought went into games, I knew planning and development did, but I never thought about the theoretical side of games. I feel the reading help with my game, as I'm trying to follow the MDA system and keep the idea of different "fun"s in mind. The readings also help increase my research and reading strategies. I did politics and Society for the leaving cert, but that was 1 (2? I can't remember) year ago, so I haven't been keeping up those skills.

First Playable

Project update time! So this week I've been working hard on the axe side of things, I wanted allow the player to be able to pick up the axe and swing it. However I learnt something that I hope wasn't true but sadly is, You can't reused scripts!! I tried to reused the Axe Swing script from jimmy Vegas and it work, but when I recreated it, it did work ! Unity you picky bastard you. Oh yeah I also made a building too, screen shot taken by Me. I also work on taking the axe out of the wall but had to focus on the ray-casting which was a pain in the ass because I completely forgot about it and had to go back to work on it. Honestly I've spent more then 3 hours working on this and while I'm proud of what I've done so far, I also sad because I really wanted to get to the first playable stage of the game but haven't be able to, Hell I still haven't gotten to the player able to take the damn axe out of the damn wall yet. This screen shot of my game does

Unity tutortial 07

Another week, another unity tutorial this time I'm not following along with Jimmy Vegas' tutorial series and instead following another series of tutorial to learn how to put an inventory in my game ! In particular, this video  Unity Inventory UI Tutorial  which is a 3d inventory ! Thank god, every fucking tutorial I looked for inventory were for 2d games, not 3d. I did find a blog as well but when I did try to follow along, it didn't go so well so I decide to ditch that and found a 5 minute video. Working on my inventory, yes I'm using my JV tutorial world and turned off fade in, Screen shot taken by me. Now it's confession time and I thought I would say this : I miss Jimmy Vegas. Yeah his tutorial weren't great but some of these tutorial go really fast and you just have no idea what is going on. That's why for my next tutorial I did Jimmy Vegas RPG tutorial #024 Boss Ai  ! Unfortunately Jimmy's Video is part of a series and I don't really w

Game Fun

This week reading is all about Games and fun. The main reading first talks about the  Natural Funativity  by Noah Falstein. This article is about the important of fun with education, how it can teaches skills in order for humanity to survive and how this ties into games now of day. It's a interesting article about fun and how it ties into education.  However that is not the only reading this week,  Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades: Players Who Suit Muds  is another reading and is on the same subject. This time finding four types of "Fun" people have with MUDs games, these funs are: 1. Achievement , 2. Exploration, 3. Socializing  (Role-playing) and 4. Imposition. The article goes into detail of what each of fun's area and who the players are, even giving the players names as well. 1.Achievers, 2. Explorers, 3. Socialisers and 4. Killers. The article also makes clear that a player doesn't have to stick to one type of fun, depending on the game, their mood or etc

Prototype

Is this just the week of prototype ? At least I don't have to do the stupid marshmallow challenge again. Any who, Welcome back to this shit show ! Today I've started my project/prototype. So let's talk about the prototype, two week ago I gave a link to my Dundoc, turns out it was working, sorry about that ! I've now fixed it and it should be working (hopefully). So again link to my Dundoc.  Here some of the work for my dundoc, honestly I haven't been updating it and need to update, as I'm not fully happy with it. Weapon being highlight to show it can be pick up, taken/drawn by me. Some of the Level Design, taken/Drawn by me. Another bit of Level Design, Taken/Drawn by me Design of the ui, taken/Drawn by me Sketch #1 of my UI, with explanation, taken/drawn by me More Level design, taken/drawn by me.  I should mention that I'm 100% sure about my UI so I might do more sketching and prototyping before finalising it. Unity Tutorial 06

Isn't My Game's new skybox pretty ? Taken by me This week on unity tutorial I learned about SkyBox, taking the axe, fade in and Environments. Let's start with the Skybox, which I thought would be a lot harder then it's actually is! It's really cool to change something as important as the sky and for it to be so simple, well for Unity standard . My actual Skybox, taken by me. I like how we learned to take the axe from the tree, as this will be useful for my game, so I know what I'll be coding next. So far I thought this week was one of the easiest week and then I started #11. First there was no code page, so I had to follow the video and honestly I don't like following the video for code. I have to full screen the video because I can't see it then click out of it to type the code then have to double check its right. Worst is mr Vegas sometimes makes mistakes like 001SceneStart script then realized and screws up your scripts! I'm not bitt

Game Decision

This week reading discusses the idea of decision making, with the main reading being " Building a Princess saving app. " and is roughly 51 pages long. One of the interesting aspects of reading was the learning curves of games, how this can effect the enjoyment of the game, how games can test new skills and test said skills. Super Mario Bros for the Nes is great at decision making, Image taken from  Wikipedia This ties nicely into the additional reading, " Choice and Conflict - What Does Choice Mean in Games? " by Extra Credits. This reading discusses  what is choice and what does choice mean in games? Now while choice is a debatable  concept and extra credit doesn't provide any solid evidence for their definition of choice, said definition is interesting. Specifically, the separation of choice and calculation. While some would argue that there's no need for separation, as both are similar, one way of looking at it is that it is a spectrum.  Anoth
