This week reading is all about Games and fun. The main reading first talks about the Natural Funativity by Noah Falstein. This article is about the important of fun with education, how it can teaches skills in order for humanity to survive and how this ties into games now of day. It's a interesting article about fun and how it ties into education.
However that is not the only reading this week, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, Spades: Players Who Suit Muds is another reading and is on the same subject. This time finding four types of "Fun" people have with MUDs games, these funs are: 1. Achievement, 2. Exploration, 3. Socializing (Role-playing) and 4. Imposition. The article goes into detail of what each of fun's area and who the players are, even giving the players names as well. 1.Achievers, 2. Explorers, 3. Socialisers and 4. Killers.
The article also makes clear that a player doesn't have to stick to one type of fun, depending on the game, their mood or etc. The player can play a completely different fun style if they wish. This an interesting article, discussing how Players can different types of fun with a game, which makes sense, an example of a game that has all of these types of Fun is The Sims 2.
The Sims 2 allows the sims to have wishes, which are like achievements, a huge community has built around the the game, having a website so that players could upload and share their creation. The mystery behind Bella Goth and her disappearance. Also the sims is famous for just letting you kill your sims off and Sims 2 allows the player to kill them off in many more ways.
The additional Reading is the Kinds of Fun, a previous reading yet ties back into this week reading nicely. This reading focuses on the MDA, mechanics, Dynamic and Aesthetics. Including some examples of the different types of "Fun", for example: Fantasy, Fellowship and etc.
As said before this was a previous reading and is still interesting, however since this has been discuss before I recommend reading the blog post Game MDA.
